If you’re like me, your only experience of Fagin will be from the musical Oliver! and a brief understanding that it had been developed from a Dickens novel… This one man show depicts Fagins last hour before he was hung, presenting flashbacks which told the story of Oliver that I knew well. James Hyland skillfully portrays a multitude of characters, from Nancy to Bullseye the dog and obviously Fagin both in his cell and in action during the flashbacks. The minimal set and tech allowed for full focus on the performer, who seamlessly swapped between narratives and kept the audience engaged for the full hour. It was funny, though provoking and upsetting, but all in all a spectacular performance that left me wanting to read the book and follow these vivid characters further.
James performs a selection of one man shows, mainly Dickens based, so look out for him at a theatre near you! He is one of the most impressive physical performers I have seen for a while so don’t miss it!!
